BDA Hamburg Architektur Preis

The jury for the BDA Hamburg Architecture Prize 2020 awarded the extension of the Heilwig Gymnasium a 3rd prize on 20 November. At the same time, the Hamburg Heights on the former Spiegel Island received an appreciation. The Association of German Architects awards the prize to architects and builders at the same time. The building owner of the grammar school in Hamburg-Alsterdorf is the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg SBH I Schulbau Hamburg. According to the jury's decision, the Johanneum's sister grammar school, which is rich in tradition, was newly built as a typical series school designed by Paul Seitz and subsequently extended several times. The most recent extension with a second gymnasium under new classrooms differs from previous additions in that it continues the characteristic brick construction into the present. The buried gymnasium as well as the superimposed teaching units quote the typical concrete column aesthetics of the Seitz system with conical framings. This creates a harmonious ensemble that does not deny its time of origin.
